CINF Social Networking Events

Once again, the Division of Chemical Information put together a set of great social events, starting with the Welcoming Reception on Sunday. The reception was attended by about 80 members and friends. Helped along by a lovely selection of food and drinks, it was great to see everybody mingling and chatting. As before, the Welcoming Reception hosted the CINF Scholarship for Scientific Excellence poster session (sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry) and this meeting saw two posters being presented. The Division is grateful to the sponsors for this event: Bio-Rad Laboratories, InfoChemOptibriumPerkinElmerThieme Chemistry, and ACS Symposium Series.

Monday saw two events on the CINF social calendar. During the afternoon RSC eScience team hosted a workshop as part of the “Social Networking” symposium organized by Antony Williams and Jennifer Maclachlan. In the evening the Division hosted Harry’s Party, sponsored exclusively by ACS Publications. As in the tradition of this famous Party (see an article about Harry’s Party in Chemical Information Bulletin, Spring 2013, and a page about Harry’s Party at CINF website), it was arranged in a small suite with a good view, excellent snacks and drinks, and stimulating conversations among about 60 attendees.

Tuesday featured the Division of Chemical Information Luncheon held at the Convention Center, exclusively sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. A superb lunch menu was accompanied by a very well received talk by the invited speaker, Prof. Katy Borner of Indiana University, who spoke about “Multi-Scale Maps of Scholarly Activity” (slides). During the Luncheon, the CINF Scholarship for Excellence awards were presented to the winners: Abhik Seal and Johannes Hachmann. Congratulations to the winners!

Tuesday evening saw the Herman Skolnik Reception held at the JW Marriott, honoring the 2013 awardee, Dr. Richard Cramer. Attended by more than 80 people, this was a great opportunity for guests to meet Dr. Cramer and interact with the speakers from the Symposium held earlier in the day. The Symposium and Reception were generously co-sponsored by Certara, Infochem, Novartis, and the Journal of Cheminformatics.

As always, many thanks to our Division colleagues, Leah McEwen and Judith Currano, who put in effort and time for making room arrangements and menu orders for our social events. And, of course, we all greatly appreciate our generous sponsors, without whom we would not have been able to put on such a great line-up of events in Indianapolis.

I anticipate another set of great social networking events at the next Spring 2014 ACS Meeting and hope to see you all there.
