Education Committee

Information Skills for Graduate Students

One of the main agenda items for the CINF Education Committee at the fall Meeting will be to discuss a draft document on information skills needed for successful graduate students.  Please feel free to join the Education Committee’s Meeting and participate in this discussion.

Guidelines for ACS Accredited Undergraduate Chemistry Degrees

The ACS Committee on Professional Training (CPT) is developing the next revision of the Guidelines, which will be adopted in 2014.  CPT will hold an open meeting at the 246th ACS National Meeting in Indianapolis on Sunday, September 8, 2013, from noon to 1:30pm in the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown Hotel.  Discussion will focus on the proposed changes to the guidelines for ACS approval. Lunch will be provided.  One document under review is the Supplement on Chemical Information Skills. The CINF Education Committee plans to send comments to CPT about proposed changes to the Chemical Information Searching part of the Guidelines. The Education Committee also plans to review the Chemical Information Literacy Competencies for Undergraduate Chemistry Students to see if any revisions are needed.

Explore Chemical Information Teaching Resources (XCITR)

FIZ CHEMIE Berlin was very generous to develop and host the XCITR website, but due to changing circumstances is no longer able to do so. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has graciously agreed to host XCITR in 2013. The URL has stayed the same:

At the end of the year, RSC and the XCITR Board will evaluate the future support needed for XCITR. There are approximately 50 items in the XCITR collection now. The current goal is to encourage more submissions from busy colleagues so that content they have already created can be used by other librarians and by chemistry instructors.  The CINF Education Committee has initiated efforts to increase the number of items in XCITR with the goal of doubling the size of the collection by the end of 2013.

Submissions of educational materials from information providers, chemistry instructors, and librarians are desired.  Submissions can be descriptions with links to web pages or videos on a provider’s website or deposition of documents.  Because the audience is broad, XCITR is an excellent way to share information with colleagues and clients.

Biennial Conference on Chemical Education 2014.

The Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) is a national meeting sponsored by the Division of Chemical Education (DivCHED) of the American Chemical Society (ACS).   The 23rd BCCE will be held at Grand Valley State University, Michigan, on August 3-7, 2014.  Please see The theme for the 2014 meeting is Greener on the Grand: Empowering Chemical educators for a Greener Tomorrow.

Call for workshops begins June 3, 2013 and the call for symposia begins August 1, 2013.  The deadline for submitting proposals for workshops and symposia is December 6, 2013.  Proposals for symposia that fit into tracks of: Education Research, Advances in Pedagogy, Computers and Technology in Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Chemical Informatics, Global Chemistry Education, Chemistry for the Public, Discipline Specific Symposia, and any other topics you wish to propose will be welcome.

At the Fall ACS National Meeting, the CINF Education Committee will decide whether or not to submit a proposal for BCCE 2014.  Any CINF members interested in participating in BCCE 2014 should contact Grace Baysinger.
