Letter from the Editor

Thanks for reading the ACS Chemical Information Bulletin (CIB). I am a new member of the CINF community and it has been a fantastic experience contributing a small part to the CINF Division as editor of the Fall 2013 CIB. The previous ACS meeting in New Orleans (245th) was my first experience with the CINF Division. Wow, what a fantastic, dedicated, and welcoming group. If you are not a CINF member already, I encourage you to check us out!

You may notice the new look of the CIB. We were able to take the ACS Adobe InDesign stationary templates and modify them for the CIB. The new design now better reflects the recommended ACS graphic standards. More importantly, I hope the new design brings a modern, consistent, and more simplified digital look to the PDF version of the CIB. We hope you enjoy the new face of the CIB, and welcome any feedback. I’m not sure how or even why, but typography has become somewhat of a new hobby for me, so laying out the CIB in Adobe InDesign was a lot of fun (though I have much to learn, so for all the real typographers and graphic designers out there, go easy on me)!  We also hope to bring a complete epub version of the CIB alongside the PDF and HTML versions in the near future.

In this pre-conference issue, you will find two book reviews by Bob Buntrock, an interview with Maureen Rouhi (Editor-in-Chief of Chemical & Engineering News) by Svetla Baykoucheva, and recommended literature reading by Song Yu. We have also included news and report updates from a subset of our committees, notes from our generous sponsors, and the technical program for the upcoming 246th ACS Meeting in Indianapolis, IN (Sept. 8–12). In addition, one of our readers (and future CINF member) submitted a short summary of his recent interest with linked data and the semantic web.

I would like to thank everyone who submitted content and assisted with the production of the CIB. And many thanks to Svetla Baykoucheva for introducing me to David Martinsen and recommending the Editor position. Lastly, I will be editing the fall and spring pre-conference Issues of the CIB, while Svetlana Korolev will continue as the post-conference Winter and Summer CIB Editor.
